Unveiling "The Attic": A Unique Blend of Nature and Industrial Design

Zi Ying Yang's Award-Winning Residential House Design

In a world where urbanization often overshadows nature, Zi Ying Yang's design, "The Attic," brings the outdoors in. This unique residential house design, which won the Silver A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award in 2020, combines the rawness of industrial design with the serenity of nature, creating a harmonious living space.

The inspiration for "The Attic" comes from the desire to integrate the greenery of the outdoor garden into the interior space. The owner wanted a home where the family could enjoy the open landscape as soon as they stepped in. Zi Ying Yang achieved this by using natural light and wood elements to echo the outdoor environment and create layers of light and shadow.

What sets "The Attic" apart from other designs is its unique use of the attic space. Attic houses are rare in Taiwan, but Zi Ying Yang capitalized on this feature to enhance the sense of openness. Elements of iron, cement, and wood were incorporated to evoke the industrial atmosphere of New York lofts. However, the abundant natural light, white walls, and neutral tones balance the rawness, resulting in a fresh and minimalist aesthetic.

The realization of "The Attic" design was guided by the concept of "30% design and 70% life." This approach emphasizes the importance of leaving enough space for the homeowner to add their personal touch. To allow light to permeate the space, walls were minimized, creating a bright living area. The owner's love for pottery art is reflected in the architectural concrete paint's plain cement color, which complements the large art painting and contributes to the elegant salon atmosphere.

The design also prioritizes family interaction. The open floor plan of the ground floor, which includes the living room, dining room, and kitchen, facilitates free communication among family members. The television, an important feature of Taiwanese living rooms, was made flexible to move with the family, enhancing the communal experience.

Despite the challenges posed by Taiwan's subtropical climate and frequent rainy days, Zi Ying Yang successfully designed a practical and tasteful transition area. The hallway features a shoe cabinet and painting, and the gradual change in building materials from the hallway to the living area defines each area's function and mood.

In conclusion, "The Attic" is a testament to Zi Ying Yang's innovative approach to residential house design. By blending the rawness of industrial design with the tranquility of nature, Zi Ying Yang has created a living space that is not only aesthetically pleasing but also fosters family interaction. This unique design, which has been recognized with a prestigious A' Design Award, is sure to inspire future trends in residential design.
